Spring Showcase

2019 Spring Showcase Photography Contest Results

Each club member was invited to submit one photographic print to the contest, which involved voting by visitors to the Showcase in Perseverance Hall. This year’s first place winner was Jon Bertsch (JGI) for “Leader of the Pride”.

Leader of the Pride, Serengeti Park, Tanzania

We watched this male and the alpha female of the pride for over an hour as they mated several times. It’s not often that one gets to see this type of behavior but this day we were lucky enough to stumble upon the scene. In between mating rounds the male would prowl the area watching for other male lions and keeping an eye on the rest of the pride in the nearby grasses.

Water is Life

There are three elements to this composition: the rocks, which over thousands upon thousands of years have been eroded and rounded by the power of water; the plants which need water to survive and grow; and of course the water itself which flows around all in a gentle, bubbly embrace.

Sunset Procession of the Herd- Khawai, Botswana

During the dry season in Botswana (August/September), sunsets are particularly beautiful because of the large amount of dust in the air. Our guide positioned our vehicle where the elephant herd (of about 30 individuals) would pass between us and the setting sun as they moved to their nighttime resting point. This group of four passed just at the right time to catch them silhouetted against the setting sun.

Keyhole Sunset

Pfeiffer Beach, Big Sur. I took this shot while other photographers around me were running from the waves. I've been doing this long enough to always take off my shoes on the beach!

“Mt. Diablo at Sunrise” 1st Place

“This is looking east at Mt Diablo from a clear spot along the bay area Skyline Trail south of the Tilden Park steam trains and north of the intersection of Grizzly Peak Blvd and Fish Ranch Rd. I took it in November after working an owl shift at the ALS.”

Dan Parks

“Beijing Airport at Sunrise” 2nd Place

“I had to wait 20 minutes for the floor to clear of people while my wife was becoming more and more annoyed with me after a long 15 hour flight. The photo turned out to be her favorite from the trip though. The reflection of the skylight atrium in the polished floor, with the low angle sunlight, along with the information desk identified by a simple question mark was just to hard to resist to shoot.”

Jules Feher

“Open Path to Energy Future” 3rd Place

“As I was driving around the hills near the Altamont Pass in Livermore looking for photo opportunities, I noticed an open gate to a utility road. This road led to a small hill with four wind turbines on top. As luck would have it, all four turbines were turning begging to be photographed.”
